Where Ah? (WAh)

lowkey its really also

A project initiated by a group of friends, Where Ah? sought to document disappearing trades in Singapore. The project focused on street barber trade and fortune-telling on the streets of Singapore. While both trades were very different, they both faced similar challenges: a lesser demand among younger Singaporeans, as well as the Keep Singapore Clean campaign. The campaign takes a rather negative view towards these communities: street barbers, for example, are not allowed to operate beyond specified areas, and are not allowed to pass on their trade. This has made the death of the street barber trade in Singapore a certainty. Over the course of 1.5 years, the team interviewed street barbers (one of whom, Mr Lee, retired two days later; the other is the last current street barber in Singapore), as well as fortune tellers versed in palmistry, parrot astrology and numerology. Through this project we each learnt to take on roles as photographer, sound recorder, writer, editor and designer, creating a zine and a video.
